Early Atlas progress in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients is a lot less messy once you stop treating every map like a checklist. You’re not trying to sample every mechanic yet. You’re trying to keep Waystones coming in, reach bosses fast, and open higher tiers before your stash dries up. Even if you’re trading or planning around PoE 2 Currency, the real early bottleneck is usually simple map sustain, not clever crafting or fancy side content.

Start with Waystones and boss value

Your first batch of Atlas points should go into anything that makes Waystones drop more often or in better numbers. That sounds basic, but it’s the part people skip when they get tempted by flashier nodes. Rogue Exile nodes are worth grabbing early because they add reliable extra monsters and, more importantly, more chances at Waystones. Boss nodes also matter right away. More boss rarity, better boss rewards, and Overseer Precursor Tablets all help you climb instead of stalling. Strongboxes are a safe mechanic to lean on here. They’re quick, they add loot, and they don’t usually drag you into a long detour. Essences and Rogue Exiles are fine too. Shrines, though, are easy to overrate. They feel fast, but they don’t do enough for Atlas progress when you’re still trying to unlock the board.

Push toward Fortress content with a plan

Once you’re moving toward the sixty-point range, wandering around the Atlas starts to hurt. Don’t just path upward because the map is there. Look for Hilda’s camp first, since it usually appears fairly close to where you begin. When you find her, take the node that turns map bosses into Powerful Map Bosses. That one choice changes the rhythm of progression. After that, aim for the Burning Monolith, then work toward the Western Enigma Chamber. For many players, this comes around the thirtieth map, give or take a little depending on drops and routing. If you hit a gate and don’t have the right tier, don’t panic. Run a Powerful Map Boss. It drops a Waystone exactly one tier higher than the map you’re in, which is the cleanest way to step up without gambling on random drops.

Don’t let bad routing or bad ping waste runs

There’s also a very practical side to this strategy: you need clean runs. Boss rushing sounds simple until ping spikes eat a dodge or a disconnect deletes your momentum. If your connection to the game servers is rough, it’s worth checking another gateway or using a gaming routing tool to avoid packet loss. It’s not glamorous advice, but it matters. A stable connection lets you move quickly, kill bosses on schedule, and keep your Waystone chain alive. The higher you push into Enigma Chambers, the less room you have for random lag deaths.

Open the east, then invest in the upper tree

When choosing where to branch next, the eastern route should usually come first. It opens an important section of the Atlas and sets you up for stronger long-term scaling. By the time you reach roughly one hundred and twenty points, you should be aiming to have the Arbiter down. Beating that fight unlocks the upper Atlas tree, and that’s where a lot of the good stuff sits. Tablet modifier stacking is especially strong, since getting up to four modifiers on tablets gives your mapping a much better payoff. From there, path through the middle for Cartographer Strongboxes and Magic monster pack size. Don’t spend too much chasing far outer-edge nodes unless they directly fit your plan. A tight centre-focused route usually pays better.

Keep the plan simple and keep moving

The best Atlas approach in Return of the Ancients isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the useful things quickly. Kill the boss, take the Waystone upgrades, use Strongboxes when they’re efficient, and skip slow distractions when they don’t push your map tier forward. If trading is part of your setup, checking PoE 2 Currency for sale can support gearing, but your Atlas growth still comes from smart pathing and steady boss kills. Keep that loop tight, and the board opens up far faster.
