Path of Exile 2 (POE 2) builds on the foundation of the original Path of Exile (POE 1) but introduces many changes to gameplay, systems, and presentation while preserving core ARPG elements.
One of the biggest differences is the class system. POE 2 features 12 distinct classes, including six new ones—Monk, Huntress, Mercenary, Sorceress, Warrior, and Druid—versus POE 1’s 7 classes that include the Scion (absent in POE 2). Each POE 2 class has unique weapon affinities and skill sets, creating more defined and diverse playstyles. The new ascendancy system also differs with classes having unique ascendancy trees and locked choices that emphasize specialization. For players who want to experiment across multiple classes quickly, investing in buy poe 2 currency can speed up access to gear and crafting orbs that shape builds early.
The skill gem and customization systems have been revamped. POE 2 introduces new skill gem mechanics tied more closely to weapon types and combat styles, such as your Mercenary class specializing in crossbows with distinct bolt types. Runes socketed into gear via Artificer’s Orbs are a new mechanic exclusive to POE 2, offering build customization avenues not seen in POE 1.
Movement and combat pacing also changed. POE 2 replaces the click-to-move system with WASD movement and adds a new dodge roll mechanic, making positioning and skillful movement a bigger part of combat strategy. This gives encounters a more tactical feel compared to POE 1’s faster, somewhat “hold down a button” style gameplay.
The map and endgame content systems have diverged. POE 1’s Atlas is highly complex, allowing stacking multiple map modifiers, scarabs, and league mechanics simultaneously on single maps. POE 2 features a more streamlined and accessible mapping system with fewer concurrent modifiers and a clearer progression path, trading some complexity for usability and new mechanics like Waystones.
Crafting in POE 2 additionally changes with currencies like the Artificer’s Orb and streamlined bench crafting. Although the depth remains, POE 1’s crafting is often seen as more intricate with more diverse currency interactions, crafting benches, and meta possibilities. This is where poe 2 currency for sale becomes attractive for players who want to experiment without grinding for dozens of hours.
Visuals and world design in POE 2 are upgraded, with more detailed environments, character models, and animations, while dialogue and NPC interactions are more dynamic and story-driven.
Despite changes, the core elements—loot-driven progression, randomized maps, passive skill tree style development, and deep character customization—remain intact. Both games emphasize player choice in builds and strategic gameplay, with POE 2 serving as an evolution and partial reimagining of the original.
POE 2 offers modernized systems, new classes, tactical movement, and polished visuals while simplifying some complexity for approachability. POE 1 remains revered for its deep build variety, complex crafting, and layered endgame. Both games provide rich ARPG experiences but appeal to slightly different player preferences balancing complexity and accessibility.
